Zelma Murray McDaniel of Sheffield, AL passed away at Helen Keller Hospital Saturday, June 11, 2016. Funeral services will be held at Purpose Baptist Church in Opelika, AL at 1:00 pm Friday, June 17, 2016 with burial following at Garden Hills Cemetery. He was a member of Colbert Heights Baptist Church and his pastor, Rev Seth Hood will officiate.
Mr. McDaniel was born December 27,1938 in Opelika, AL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gaynelle and his parents Zelma and Wilma McDaniel of Opelika. He is survived by his daughter, Angel Wilson (Bill) of Toronto, Canada and son, Rev. Phillip McDaniel (Kim) of Columbia, MS., and his grandchildren Shonna Battles, Shelby and Patrick McDaniel and great grandchild Chloe Battles as well as his sister, Jean English of Opelika a niece, Dorothy Green Hine (Henry) Conyers, GA and nephew Terry Green (Alisa) Wetumpka.
Mr. McDaniel graduated from Opelika’s Clift High School in 1957 and attended Auburn University. He served in the US Army, ASA on Okinawa, Laos and elsewhere. He was employed with Dairyland Farms in Opelika and Borden’s in Meridian, MS before his retirement from the State of Alabama. He was very interested in family genealogy and had a great passion for Civil War history. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and many other organizations.
Mr. McDaniel’s children, grandchildren and great grandchild were the love of his life. He never met a stranger and loved people and was loved by many. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends
