Mr. Joseph Herman Sacks passed away Tuesday night, March 22, 2016 in Huntsville, AL. He was 87. He was predeceased by his father, Percy Sacks, his mother, Rebecca Sacks, a sister, Betty Sacks Kravitz, his son, Randy Sacks and a nephew, Paul Kravitz.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Harriet Brown Sacks, two sons: Alan (Susan), Pensacola, FL, and Gordon, Auburn, AL, six grandchildren, a brother Phillip Sacks, Kingwood, TX, and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was born Jan. 11, l929, in Memphis, TN, and was raised in a very small town, Mason, TN. He joined the army in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He served two years in Korea and then became a Civil Service employee of the Army Reserve for six years, followed by eight years working for the Air Force Reserve. He met and married Harriet Brown in 1956 and they became parents of three sons. The family moved to Huntsville in 1966 so Joe could become a Financial Analyst at Redstone Arsenal. He worked for the Army in several different organizations – Missile Command, Safeguard, Ballistic Missile Defense – and retired in 1993 with 43 years of government service. For the past 23 years Joe had been an active volunteer in numerous organizations including Municipal courts, Food Bank, Crestwood Hospital, Interfaith Mission Service and First Stop. For 50 years his major volunteer effort was for Huntsville Conservative Synagogue where he served as President, Board Member, Men’s Club President, and Youth Leader among many others. He was a longtime supporter of the Jewish Federation of Huntsville, serving as a Board Member, Secretary and Fund Raiser. Joe’s motto was to be there to help others. His volunteer spirit will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, 2320 Bob Wallace Ave, Huntsville, AL 35805, followed by graveside services at Maple Hill Cemetery at 11: 45 am.
The family has requested that Memorial Donations be made to the Huntsville Conservative Synagogue, 7705 Bailey Cove Rd SE, Huntsville, AL 35802.
