Thomas Brooks Barkley, 78, of Gallion, Alabama, died March 14, 2016 at DCH Regional Medical Center. He was born March 18, 1937 in Octagon, Alabama. Brooks was a Baptist minister for 60 years serving Benvenue Baptist Baptist Church in Rocky Mountain, North Carolina, Greensboro Baptist Church in Greensboro, Alabama, First Baptist Church Waynesboro in Waynesboro, Mississippi, First Baptist Church, Hartselle, Southside Baptist Church, Decatur, Forest Hill Baptist Church, Linden, Alabama, and Thomaston Baptist Church in Thomaston, Alabama. He was a retired colonel of 25 years with the Alabama National Guard and was a member of Thomaston Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret S. Barkley; son, Lamar Allen Barkley and daughter, Jennifer Barkley (John) Gibbs; two grandchildren, Robert Brooks Gibbs and Blair Allen Gibbs of Gallion, Alabama; three sisters, Jean Dunn of Montgomery, Evelyn Norris of Bay Minette and Clarice Reed of Thomasville; and his brother, Phillip Barkley of Summit, Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Barkley; two brothers, Milton Allen Barkley and Eddie Lee Barkley; two sisters, Louise Etheridge and Ethel Gunter.
He will lie in state at Thomaston Baptist Church today, March 17, 2016 from 11:30 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service time with Rev. David Braywick, Thomas Boggs and John Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the Thomaston Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at Thomaston Baptist Church fellowship hall immediately following the burial.
