William Wayne “Bill” Childers, 83, son of the late Troy and Elizabeth Childers, was born in Vina, Alabama. He graduated from Vina High School, Larimore Business School, and the Ohio State University School of Business Management. He joined the Army, and later he and his late wife, Betty Jo, of Florence, Alabama, moved to Huntsville in 1966. Bill worked as directorate chief as procurement manager at Redstone Army Missile Command until his retirement in 1994.
Bill and Betty Jo were longtime members of Murphy Hill Church, where Mike McFarland is pastor and a dear friend.
During Bill’s retirement, he enjoyed watching his nieces, nephews and grandchildren excel in sports. He was always committed to his children, grandchildren and entire family.
Bill is survived by his son, William “Billy” Childers II (Rhonda), of Huntsville; daughter, Elizabeth Spiegel (Robert), of Huntsville; grandchildren, William Chance Childers, Daisy Childers, Meagan and Chris Ryan, Kobi Childers, Josh and Anna Hall, Julia Grace Hall, Robert and Kelli Spiegel, Erin Spiegel, and Andy and Robbie McLaughlin; great-grandchildren, Emmett Hall and Robert Spiegel IV; sister-in-law, Deborah McLaughlin (Raymond); numerous nieces and nephews; as well as dear friend, Phil Shriner.
The family wishes to thank the Trinity Place Alzheimer’s and dementia staff for their years of caring and support.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will immediately follow in the chapel, with Pastor Mike McFarland officiating. Burial will be in Tri-City Memorial Gardens in Florence. (laughlinservice.com)
