SHEFFIELD – On again… Off again… The City of Sheffield is holding a public meeting this Thursday at the Municipal Building at 6pm to unveil plans for a new resort project. This time, say City officials, it could be the “real deal”…

“I really don’t know too many details”, City Clerk Clayton Kelly told The Quad-Cities Daily, “The discussions have been held really close to the vest by the Mayor (Ian Sanford) and Elkington.” The person mentioned is John Elkington, the man who transformed a blighted street in Memphis into world famous, Beale Street, a shopping and entertainment mecca in the city’s downtown business district. And according to reports, he wants to turn Sheffield’s dilapidated City Park West into a world-class attraction.

There are no details at this time, but it is expected that Elkington will take the wraps off the plans at tomorrow night’s meeting.

City Park West is also the site, around which extensive American Indian history revolves, including Tuscumbia Landing, a major historical site along the infamous Trail of Tears. Any development near Tuscumbia Landing will, of necessity undergo extensive governmental scrutiny.

Back in 2006, plans got underway for development of the land into a Jack Nicklaus-developed golf resort. That project fell through at the advent of the worldwide economic near-collapse.
