Ronald Dale Cox, age 65, passed away Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, after a sudden illness. Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at Spry-Williams Funeral Home, Florence. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 2, at noon in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Barkley Cemetery.
Born to Ruby and Odin Cox on Nov. 25, 1950, Ron lived and worked in the Shoals for most of his life. Ron never met a stranger. He was well-known for helping others in need and was known in the Shoals for his work as a towing business operator. He often would be found helping family and friends who were stranded, no matter the distance from home.
In many ways Ron was an institution in the community, with his humor and positive outlook serving to remind others that no matter how bad a situation seemed, there were always still reasons to be merry in life. He could always be found with a smile on his face and ready to talk for awhile.
Wherever Ron went he always seemed to run into a friend or someone who would stop for a moment to catch up. While he worked hard (from sunrise often until late at night), he would always take the time for the people in his life. No higher praise can be given than that he was a friend to all who knew him.
Many people knew Ron when he sold cars at Cox Motors on 72 between the old Danmart and Clemmons Spur. He loved classic cars and always said he would fix up an old rat rod to drive around.
Ron was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He treasured his children and would be there for them, often at a moment’s notice, to help or assist them in any way he could. We would often turn to him in our dark times when we needed help or guidance in our lives. If there was anything he enjoyed as much as being a father, it was being a grandfather.
As one of 13 children, Ron grew up in a large family and had innumerable nieces, nephews and cousins. Many of them grew up around Ron and knew they could count on him if ever they had car problems or needed a safe ride home. In many cases he would go out in the middle of the night to help make sure his family got home safely.
Preceding Ron in death were father, Odin Cox, and mother, Ruby Cox. Brothers, Arvel, Charles, Edward, Howard and Marvin went to be with the lord before Ron, as did sister, Helen Cox Thrasher.
Surviving Ron are brothers, Clifford, Harlon, Hershel, Jimmy and Ray, and sister, Wanda. He is survived by wife, Glenda (Burns) Cox; children, Brenda, Ronnie, Mandi, Perry and Randy; many grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
