Howard Camp graduated from Boaz High School in 1941. He served 33 years, active and reserve status, in the U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force, serving on active duty during WWII and the Korean War as a fighter pilot and test pilot, and the Vietnam War as a transport pilot. He also was privileged to fly with the U.s. Air Force Demonstration Team during the Korean War. He retired as a full colonel and Command Pilot. He was an unabashed flag-waver, and was totally dedicated to the ideals of America’s founding fathers.
Col. Camp attended the Alabama School of Trades in East Gadsden where he studied architectural drafting. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1956 with a BS degree in Animal Husbandry and in 1957 with a BS degree in Agronomy and Grassland Management. Upon graduation MSU, Col. Camp owned a cattle farm and managed the Camp Grain and Milling Company in Talladega, Alabama before he moved to Huntsville and joined NASA in 1960 and retired in 1990.
Col. Camp was a flying e n t h u s i a s t , logging more than 25,000 hours in the air flying all types of aircraft, from experimental planes to four engine jets. He was a certified i n s t r u m e n t flight instructor and taught scores of student pilots.
Col. Camp was a member of Holmes Street United Methodist Church in Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to that church.
He is survived by his wife Janet Camp of Madison; daughters, Susan (Bert) Burns, Flat Rock, North Carolina and Tracey (Frank) Foster, Gloster, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Casey McCarty, Tara Adams, Frank Foster, Jr., and Brook Foster; and greatgranddaughter, Rayburn Foster.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 14th at 3:00 p.m. at Holmes St. United Methodist Church with Rev. Todd Owen and Dr. Darryl Goldman officiating. Berryhill Funeral Home is assisting the family
