The 9th annual Athens Storytelling Festival kicked off today in the big top on The Square. Tall tales, yarns, folklore, and humor were shared. Mayor Ronnie Marks welcomed students from Limestone and surrounding counties, and storytellers Bil Lepp (a champion liar contestant…it’s true…Google it) and Andy Offutt Irwin even took time to mess with students sitting behind them by pointing them out as troublemakers.

About 9,000 students will experience this art form for free thanks to funding from the local Legislative Delegation. Tonight is local storytellers night and public events resume Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. For a schedule and tickets, go to www.athenstorytellingfestival. com.
