Andrew “Andy” D. Mitchell, of Madison, passed away Sunday at his home, of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Franck and Eileen Power Mitchell of Tullahoma, TN, and his brother, William Franck Mitchell, of Sunset Beach, NC. Andy was born in Richmond, VA.
He is survived by his wife, Heather Burns Mitchell; and three children, Matthew Douglas Mitchell and wife, Katie, of Dade City, FL, Victoria “Tori” Mitchell of Atlanta, and Johnathan Drew Mitchell and wife, Sarah, of Tampa, FL, along with three grandchildren, Ben, Richard and Asher, and one on the way; sister, Pat Warner and husband, Marv of Raleigh, NC; and brothers, Jim Mitchell and wife, Judy, of Estill Springs, TN, and John Mitchell and wife, Nancy, of Tullahoma, TN.
Andy grew up and went to high school in Tullahoma and graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1968 with a B.S. Degree in Statistics, at which point the U.S. Army commissioned him as a Military Intelligence Officer. He went on to serve twenty years in various assignments around the world.
After retiring from the Army in 1988, Andy and his three children moved to Madison, AL, where he accepted a position with Intergraph Corporation. He worked there until his retirement in 2012.
Thanks to God, the U.S. Army, Intergraph and a wonderful family, Andy, Heather, and family have had the opportunity to travel the world, meeting and seeing some of God’s best work. His sense of humor was sprinkled across his life and served him well.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, October 9 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville. A memorial service will immediately follow at the church with the Rev. Paul Pradat officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Family Care or St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville, AL.
