UPDATE 10:29 am:

Athens Police have closed Forrest Street at Washington Street, and East Street is congested due to student pick up. Police encourage parents to park on East Street or Beaty Street and walk to the campus track to get children because of traffic congestion.

School officials have opted to dismiss Athens Middle School students for the day after a bomb threat was reported.
Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said the search will take an extended length of time because of the size and configuration of the two-story school, and the layout of the campus grounds.
“It could be this afternoon before we feel the campus is secure,” Johnson said.
Parents may pick up children at the track at Athens Middle. If parents cannot pick up children, the children will go to Athens High School for pick up.

ATHENS-Athens Police are on the Athens Middle School campus after a bomb threat was reported. Students are evacuated and safe. School officials urge parents to give police time to search the campus before checking out students. However, parents who want to go ahead and check out students can do so at the Athens Middle School track.
