Pam Godwin died on Monday, after a courageous battle with a long illness. Born in Pittsburgh, she began her nursing education at Vanderbilt and attended the University of Alabama. Mrs. Godwin graduated in the first class of the nursing school at Auburn University, Montgomery, where she was a member of the National Nursing Honor Society. Later, after coming with her family to Huntsville she spent her nursing career at Crestwood Hospital, where she advanced through several positions.
Pam was a devoted and active member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and a Docent at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens. Her own gardens reflected her love of planting and caring for flowers. She also served actively in her community homeowners’ association. During her childhood and adolescence her parents lived in a number of American cities and South American countries including Chile and Argentina. Pam graduated from the American Community School in Buenos Aires. She was truly a person who bloomed wherever she lived.
Mrs. Godwin is survived by her beloved family, husband Robert Hood Godwin III; her sons Robert H. Godwin IV (fiance Julie Shedd); Michael O’Hear Godwin (Kristin.) and her brother-in-law John Godwin (Susan). She held close her brothers John O’Hear (Nina) and Patrick O’Hear (Karen), and their families, all of whom were dear to her throughout her years.
She truly adored her grandchildren, Margaret, Ellie, and Beck. She was their “GG,” and a central part of their lives. This love was extended to her nieces and nephews.
Pam and Bobby traveled extensively, and Pam had a keen love of knowledge about places and people. Perhaps the thing that will be remembered most is her enduring love of living and of those she loved. She was the mainstay for many, with a zest for experiencing life which she maintained until its very end.
Services will be held Thursday, September 17 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, with visitation at 9 am and funeral services at 11 am, Father Louis Giardino officiating. A reception at the church will follow the services. A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham at 4:00 pm.
The family suggests donations to the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Huntsville.
