MONTGOMERY – On June 11, 2015, Legislative Act 2015-459 was signed into law, which will enable the Office of the Secretary of State to share its voter list with other states in an effort to limit voter fraud.
“This legislation will allow us to increase the integrity of our voter list to ensure people are voting in their name, as well as seeing that accurate and current voter registration rolls are maintained. Sharing our database with other states will also allow us to remove those
citizens that have relocated, which will decrease the risk of voter fraud,” said Secretary Merrill. “In the spirit of bipartisanship I want to commend Representative Ainsworth and Senator Ross for their leadership in the passage of this bill.”
Beginning on September 1, 2015, Legislative Act 2015-459 will provide the following:
- Authorization for the Secretary of State to share voter lists with other states free of charge
- Require state agencies to provide information and data to the Secretary of State as necessary to maintain the state wide voter registration database
- Authorization for the Secretary of State to enter into agreements to share information with other states in order to maintain the statewide voter registration database
Alabama has joined Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia in this effort to improve voter registration and participation.
