Samuel Armstead Flippen 73, passed away Thursday. Born in Decatur, he grew up in Russellville where he earned his Eagle Scout badge and graduated from Russellville High School. He was the quarterback of the football team and a member of the State Champion Track Team. Mr. Flippen was the Branch Manager of the Alabama Central Credit Union, retiring from the Florence branch. He was a long time member of Highland Baptist Church prior to moving to Huntsville, where he became a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Wheeler and Marguerite Shaw Flippen; brother, William Shaw Flippen, and sisters Margaret Ann Flippen Wright and Betty Jane Flippen Bryson. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Coker Flippen; daughter, Suzanne Flippen Clowers (Chris); son, Mark Wheeler Flippen (Julie) of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Fisher Clowers, Hayes Clowers, Lucy Flippen and Layla Flippen, who affectionately called him SamBam.
Visitation will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. in the Whitesburg Baptist Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Jackson and Carey Green officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Whitesburg Christian Academy Building Fund or Hospice Family Cares.
