UPDATE-
At 4:05 p.m., Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said officers still are diverting traffic around the wreck scene at U.S. 31 and Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road. Johnson said investigators are mapping the scene. He said the log truck and fallen logs have not yet been removed because of the ongoing investigation.
Motorists should use alternate routes to avoid delays. Johnson said the southbound lanes on U.S. 31 will be closed for an extended period of time. Officers will try to open one of the northbound lanes after the investigation is completed. Johnson said he cannot give a time frame on when all lanes will open.
“We are being thorough in our investigation and in mapping out the scene,” Johnson said.
Johnson thanked Athens Fire and Rescue, State Troopers, Limestone County Sheriff’s Department, Coroner’s Office, Med-Flight, and Athens-Limestone Ambulance Service for their assistance.
ATHENS– A Wreck on U.S. 31 at Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road at 12:55 pm, Tuesday, August 11 is causing delays due to the fact involvement of a log truck in the accident. Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said one person was injured and one person died in the afternoon wreck.
Names of the victims have not been released due to notification of the families. The accident is still under investigation and northbound traffic is being diverted onto Nuclear Plant Road. Southbound is being diverted onto Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road.
