Donald J. Zimmer, 83, formerly of Tuscumbia, Alabama, passed away on July 18, 2015, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on Feb. 2, 1932, to Walter Zimmer and Alma Westendorf in Springville, New York.
He is survived by seven children, Constance (Gerald) Ellis, Sharon Zimmer, Donna (Peter) Maybe, Dale (Joseph) Ingraham, Jan Zimmer, and Linda (Deane) Bragg. He also has 23 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his son, Theodore J. Zimmer, (Janice Zimmer).
A special mention to Stephanie (Agen) Schafer. Throughout his life Don was employed as a butcher in Springville, New York, a machinery builder for a worldwide firm – Bechtel Engineering, and a police officer for Okeechobee Florida Search and Rescue. He also owned and operated Muldoon’s Tavern in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Don eventually retired as a heavy equipment operator as he loved moving the “earth.” In retirement Don loved woodworking and made many things for family and friends. He also was a “Jack of all trades” and loved helping others on their projects. Throughout his life he also loved and owned classic cars and built several hot rods back in the 50s and 60s.
There will be a service for Don at Shabbona Illinois Church of Christ, 104 E. Navaho Ave., on July 28, 2015, at 7 p.m. There will also be a celebration of life for family and friends in Springville, New York at a later date. Don will be laid to rest with his mother, Alma, and brother, Robert, in Deland, Florida.
