MONTGOMERY-Governor Robert Bentley on Sunday, July 19 announced that he believes the National Guard should be armed when they are on active duty for the state. The Governor has asked National Guard leadership to develop a plan that will allow Guardsmen to be armed and be able to safely protect themselves and citizens of Alabama from any danger that should arise.
The Alabama National Guard is currently reviewing policies and procedures for arming Guardsmen on active duty.
This action by the Governor comes after several other states enabled the same policy for their states. This action comes in the wake of the four Marines and one U.S, Navy sailor were murdered in the shooting that took place in Chattanooga this past week.
Bentley says the directive is for the plan to be the safest, most secure and responsible manner to arm the men and women who serve in the Alabama National Guard.
