Roy Edward Shaw, 75, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015, at home. Roy was born in Beloit, Wisconsin, to Loyd Edward Shaw and Frances Holton Shaw on May 10, 1940.
Roy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Robin Gallagher Shaw, of Athens; two sons, Loyd Edward Shaw and wife, Bebe, and Mark Roy Shaw, all of Athens; two daughters, Joanna Ruth Wiley and husband, Price, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Tina Robin Cox and husband, Rob, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Loyd Edward Shaw III, Helen Nance Wiley, Grace Reed Wiley and Fran Brindley Shaw.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sandra Shaw Haas; and one son, Anthony Carroll Shaw.
Roy was a 1958 graduate of Decatur High School and attended St. Bernard College in Cullman before joining the Army. Roy and Robin moved to Athens in 1963, and joined his family as one of the founding families of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Roy was a general contractor in Athens and the surrounding area and built hundreds of houses, apartments and many commercial buildings. He was a tireless volunteer and construction supervisor for the Habitat for Humanity, Limestone County affiliate since its conception in 1982.
Roy and Robin lived on the Elk River for many years, where Roy taught countless people to water ski and was known for never tiring of driving the boat so everyone got a turn. In addition to always having fun with his family and friends, Roy enjoyed fishing, having breakfast with his friends and being an active member of the community.
A Memorial Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at St. Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charley Alookaran officiating. Visitation was 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
