Alfred Henry Stovall Jr., 54, died May 12, 2015, at Brookwood Medical Center in Homewood. He was born November 9, 1959 in Decatur.
He is survived by his sisters, Janet Stovall and Patricia Stovall Smith (Jack) of Vestavia; niece, JoAnna Merchant (Glen) and four great-nephews, Jay, Noah, Dean and Graham Merchant; two uncles, Grady Eugene Sledge of Florence and Thomas Walker Sledge of Choctaw, Oklahoma; one aunt, Peggy Sledge of Cherokee; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Henry Stovall Sr. and Ruby Josephine Sledge Stovall. Mr. Stovall was a graduate of Decatur High School and attended John C. Calhoun Community College. Mr. Stovall loved music and Alabama football. While growing up he sang in the choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He studied guitar with Jimmy Cantrell, Jerriel Parker and Margarite de Quesada. He also studied voice with Mr, Cantrell. He sang in the choir and played guitar in the orchestra at First Baptist Church in Decatur. After moving to Birmingham, he played in the Praise Band at Philadelphia Baptist Church, Cahaba Heights in Vestavia. He worked at several grocery stores and Walmart in Decatur. Graveside service will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Reverend Jeff Parker officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the music program at Philadelphia Baptist Church, 3001 Pump House Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35243.
