ATHENS-There are 1,000 children ready to spring into action with the Athens Recreation Department.
Opening Day will be Saturday, April 4, for three sports: baseball, softball and soccer. Opening ceremonies will be held for the baseball and softball teams starting at 9 a.m. at the Sportsplex on U.S. 31.
Athens Recreation Director Ben Wiley said participation in spring sports continues to grow. This year, 440 players are signed up for baseball. There
are 260 signed up for softball, and 270 signed up for spring soccer. In addition, Athens Recreation offers archery at Swan Creek Park, and there are 30 participants signed up for that sporting activity.
“I think there are so many benefits in the participation of recreational sports,” Wiley
said. “We believe our programs provide interaction for kids with their peers and teach healthy competition along with life lessons. The most important thing I believe that recreation provides is a chance for the community to support our young people.”
Wiley said the community and parents of the players support recreational programs not only by attending games, but serving in positions such as volunteer coaches and dugout moms and dads.
“These parents and volunteers help make our programs successful,” Wiley said.
During Saturday’s opening ceremonies, the teams will parade around the ball field in their uniforms. Mayor Ronnie Marks will throw the opening pitch.
“Seeing the excitement on the faces of the children is my favorite part of opening day,” Marks said. “They are carrying signs with their team names, carrying balloons and waving. One year, one young boy slid across home plate he was so excited.”
