Dale Thornton – Obituary

Dale Thornton, age 91 of Sheffield, died Friday, January 30, 2015. Visitation will be Monday, February 2, 2015, 1-2 p.m. at Our Lady of the Shoals Catholic Church. His funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Father Michael Adams officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Dale was a native of Sheffield and a veteran of WWII. He was a salesman with Olim’s Department Store of Sheffield for forty-eight years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Shoals Catholic Church and taught Dale Carnegie courses all over north Alabama for ten years. He was very active in his church and Our Lady of the Shoals Helpline. He was preceded in death by his first wife the mother of his children, Mary Elizabeth Barclay Thornton and wife, Dorothy Brink Thornton.

Survivors include his sons, David B. Thornton and wife Brenda of Tuscumbia, James R. Thornton and wife Donna of Hampton, VA; brother, Thomas L. Thornton and wife Mildred of Muscle Shoals; grandchildren, Bryan D. Thornton (Emily) of Tuscumbia, Jeffrey T. Thornton and wife Kristel of Collierville, TN, Ragan Thornton Smith of Poquoson, VA; great-grandchildren, Mary Beck Thornton, Price Thornton, Nataleigh Thornton and Madison Thornton, three nieces and four nephews.

Pallbearers are Bryan Thornton, Jeffrey Thornton, Billy Brink, Thomas Thornton, Steve Sims and Willie Morris.

Dale’s family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Cypress Cove and Gentiva Hospice for their dedicated care.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Shoals Helpline.
