Andrew Eugene “Gene” Smith, 83, of Guntersville, formerly of Huntsville, passed away on January 4, 2015 at Marshall Medical Center North. Mr. Smith retired from the US Army after 24 years of service. He later worked at Parker Hannifin until his retirement from there. He moved to Guntersville, AL. in 1995 and enjoyed being able to fish. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Mr. Smith is preceded by his parents, Hayes and Mary Smith; brother, Hayes Smith, Jr. and sister, Sue Brown. He is survived by his wife, Julia Smith; daughters, Sandy Acklin (Mike) and Sheila Smith; grandsons, Mike Acklin and Anthony Acklin; great grandchildren, Kolton, Macki and Addison; Chosen son and daughter, Jason and Heather Austin and grandchildren, Evan Andrew Austin (named after Papa Smith), Ily Austin and Eliza Austin. Pallbearers will be Bobby Jones, Jason Austin, Mickey Ray Williams, Anthony Acklin, Dean Powers and Mike Acklin. The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 12:00 pm in the Hampton Cove Funeral Home Chapel. The family will accept friends from 11:00 am until time of service.
