Retired Lt. Col. Samuel C. Craig, a resident of Asheville, N.C., died Saturday, December 27, 2014, at his residence. He was 89.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Memory Hill Cemetery with Father Peter Wong officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends following the graveside services.
Col. Craig was born July 1, 1925, in Giles County, Tennessee to S.C. and Margaret Craig and was raised in Decatur. He completed grammar and high school in Decatur and graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1948.
Col. Craig was a graduate of the Squadron Office School, Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College, US. Air Force. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as Lieutenant Colonel in July of 1980 after over 31 years of active military service, including World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Following his military service, he was employed by the State of Alabama Department of Revenue, retiring from that agency in March of 1992. He was a member of The Cathedral of All Souls.
Col. Craig is predeceased by his wife, Robyn Driver Craig.
He is survived by a daughter, Connie Nell Craig of Asheville, NC; several nieces and nephews and other family members.
