Sam E. Smith – Obituary

Sam E. Smith, 90, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was born in Covington, TN and went to school in Brighton, TN.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Pence Smith; daughter, Melanie Smith (David); son, Mark Smith (Amanda); and grandsons, Steven, Adam, Nathaniel and Jack Henry.

Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy as a Medical Corpsman in World War II seeing overseas action in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific War Theater. He graduated from Memphis State University with a degree in English. Upon Graduation, he began his career at Memphis Air Force Depot, working on the IBM 705 Computer, and later went to Eglin Air Force Base, the Army Missile Command and NASA-MSFC where he retired as a Computer Specialist in 1985.

He was active in sports, especially basketball and baseball, and coached many youngsters from tee ball through Babe Ruth baseball at Fern Bell Park

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Whitesburg Baptist Church South Campus with the funeral immediately following at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whitesburg Baptist Homebound Ministry or the American Heart Association.
