Eleanor Lillian Slugg De Young, age 95, of Tuscumbia, died Friday, October 10, 2014. Her family will receive friends Tuesday, October 14, 2014, 1-2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Tuscumbia. Funeral service will follow in the church sanctuary with sons-in-law, Dr. Robert Penny, Rev. Steve Wallace and Rev. Randall Yelverton officiating. Graveside service held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in Prattville Memorial Gardens.
Eleanor, a native of Upper Moreland, PA, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tuscumbia, was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Adrian De Young.
She is survived by her son, David De Young of Ocean City, NJ; daughters, Adrianne Penny, of Ridgeland, MS; Dianne Yelverton of Florence, AL; and Debbie Wallace of Charlotte, NC. grandchildren, Victoria Penny, Elizabeth Shorter, Edward Penny, Randall Yelverton Jr., Adrian Yelverton, Terrell Yelverton, Mary Eleanor Wallace, Corson Wallace and eleven great-grandchildren.
Eleanor, a graduate of Arcadia University, in Pennsylvania, a devoted friend and mentor, a faithful pastor’s wife who liberally shared her gifts of teaching, hospitality and encouragement. She was a community leader active in Girl Scouting, founding a Scout day camp program, and establishing a youth and activity center. Eleanor was an accomplished world traveler who graciously engaged friends in her extensive, meticulously planned journeys.
Pallbearers are: Edward Penny, Jimmy Shorter, Adrian Yelverton, Randall Yelverton, Jr., Terrell Yelverton, Corson Wallace, Tyson Johnson, and Andy Thompson.
Honorary pallbearers are: Dr. Jack McLendon, Dr. Kenneth Copeland, Dr. Larry Stutts, Dr. Mark Mcllwain, Dr. William Harper, and Session of First Presbyterian Church, Tuscumbia.
The family thanks the staff of Glenwood Palliative Care and the compassionate attention of Dr. Robert Webb and The Hospice of the Shoals.
