screening-room-featuredFLORENCE-The free film series The Screening Room: Classics, Crowd-Pleasers, Cult Favorites and Neglected Gems returns at 7 p.m. Sunday, October 19, with a special showing of director Billy Wilder’s classic film noir masterpiece Double Indemnity (1944) at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, 350 N. Wood Ave., Florence, Alabama.

Smooth talking insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) meets attractive Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Double-Indemnity1Stanwyck) when he calls to renew her husband’s automobile policy. The couple is immediately drawn to each other and an affair begins. They cook up a scheme to murder Mr. Dietrichson for life insurance money with a double indemnity clause. Unfortunately, all does not go to according to plan…

Wilder’s masterpiece earned Academy Award nominations for Best Director, Best Actress (Stanwyck), Best Writing, Screenplay (by Wilder and Raymond Chandler), Best Cinematography (Black & White) and Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture and Best Sound, Recording.
