ATHENS-Fresh tomatoes on soft white bread, slathered with real mayonnaise, with a dash of salt and pepper. That’s
the recipe to enjoy the perfect tomato on a North Alabama summer day.
On Saturday, Aug. 9, starting at 9 a.m., visitors at the Athens Saturday Market can tempt their taste buds with fresh tomato sandwiches in honor of the market hosting Tomato Sandwich Day.
“The committee will be making sandwiches using tomatoes from the Market vendors,” said Market Committee Chair Laurie Glenn. “This event introduces visitors to local growers and the flavors they can enjoy from local, fresh produce.”
After filling their bellies with this tasty treat, visitors can enjoy shopping for produce, flowers, baked goods and more while listening to live music by saxophonist Tommy Friend.
Season produce at the Market includes squash, zucchini, beans, field peas, corn, tomatoes, okra, peppers, cucumbers and herbs. Gluten free baked goods, hummus, artisan tea, goat cheese, pork sausage, breakfast biscuits, cookies, sausage balls and more are also available.
The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday through August. Mark your calendars for Aug. 23 for which will feature both Kids Day and Free Ice Cream Day at the Market. For more information email spiritofathens@att.net or go to www.athenssaturdaymarket.com.
