Dr. McCoy B. Pitt
(December 8, 1921 – June 22, 2014)
Dr. Pitt died June 22, 2014. He was the last surviving Pitt brother to practice medicine in Decatur. Dr. Pitt was the first board certified obstetrician in Morgan County and practiced for thirty eight- years. He was born December 8, 1921 in Lawrence County to Elmer and Lillian Parker Pitt. He is predeceased by his parents, wife Alice Pressler Pitt, daughter Bonne Pitt Sydnor and siblings Drs. Kermit and Leldon Pitt, Alene Pitt Dockery, Blanche Pitt Holt and Julia Pitt Roberts. There will be a private family graveside service will at Burningtree Memorial Gardens. Memorial service will be at 10:30am Wednesday June, 25, 2014 at Central United Methodist Church with Pastors Gary Formby and Mitchell Williams officiating. A visitation will follow the service at the church. Dr. Pitt graduated from Lawrence County High in 1940. He attended Berea College, graduated from the medical school at the University of Alabama in 1944 and Columbia Medical School in 1946. He interned at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York and served the Army Medical Corps from 1947 to 1949 in Takasaki, Japan. Dr. Pitt left family practice in Fayette, Alabama to accept a residency at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, Louisiana to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. He also completed a fellowship at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans with Dr. Alton Ochsner in 1951. In serving the community, he was President of the Decatur Civitans, board member for Hospice of the Valley and a member of the Arts and Sciences Leadership Board at the University of Alabama. He was honored in 1998 at the Decatur General Foundation Gala XIV. He is survived by his wife Ann Meadows Pitt, son Dr. Roger Pitt (Susan) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, daughter Alys Pitt-Leif (Marc) of Los Angles, California, grandsons Capt. Todd Pitt (Julie), Benjamin Pitt, McCoy Pitt and Alexander Leif, granddaughters Dr. Beth Wilson (Mike) and Lillian Leif, one great granddaughter Lilly Wilson and blended family children Wendy Farris Smith (Jimmy Ray), Sarah Farris Powell (Edward), Billy R. Farris II (Leigh), James Glenn “Beau” Farris (Kim), blended grandchildren, Tyler Smith, Anna Smith, Christian Smith, David Wilensky, Caroline Wilensky, Marshall Wilensky, Adam Powell (Maegan), Rachel Casebolt (Tim), Lame’ LeBoff, Sydney Farris, Billy R. Farris III, Savannah Farris and Chandler Farris and great grandson Grayson Powell. Pallbearers are Alexander Leif, Capt. Todd Pitt, Benjamin Pitt, McCoy Pitt, Frazier Holibaugh, Jackson Holibaugh and Stan Fields. Honorary Pallbearers are Good Fellowship Sunday School Class, Moulton Street Cultural Club, Decatur Civitan Club, Webb Lunsford, Mac Perry, Tim Douthit, Dr. J. Felton Davenport and the following physicians: Dr. Sage Copeland, Dr. Conley Duncan, Dr. Jolly McKenzey, Dr. Scott Matthews, Dr. Paul McCain, Dr. Charles Prickett, Dr. Tracy Neal and Dr. William Walker. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to Central United Methodist or Hospice of the Valley. Berryhill Funeral Home is assisting the family.
