David Arthur Whitten Jr., age 90, was born in Liberty County, Georgia on Oct. 4, 1923. He passed into eternity on May 31, 2014. The family will receive friends for visitation today at Colbert Memorial Chapel from 11 a.m.-noon. Brother Rod Stansky will officiate the graveside service beginning at noon at Colbert Memorial Garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert, his wife of 63 years, Emogene Robinson Whitten, and their only son, David Glenn Whitten.
He is survived by his sister, Laveda Green (Palmer); brother, Dan Whitten (Francis); many nieces and nephews, including his special niece and nephew, Beverly and Jim Smith, who cared for Gene and David since 1999; and also his special caregiver, Keith Scott.
He was a veteran from WWII serving in the Philippines with MacArthur’s troops. He returned to work for AT&T as telephones were installed all over the south. He then worked for Southern Railway system as signal maintainer. He retired from Southern after 37 years and enjoyed his hobby of collecting and selling junk and planting a large community garden for his neighbors every year.
He will be missed by his family and friends.
