Samuel E. Scruggs – Obituary

samuelSamuel Edward Scruggs, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather was born June 15, 1931 in Courtland, Alabama to the late Samuel Otis and Eva Draper Scruggs.  He departed this life peacefully at Decatur Morgan Hospital-DGH Campus on May 6, 2014 surrounded by his family.

He was a graduate of Courtland High School, Alabama A& M University and Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.  He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.  He was a teacher and principal in the Cullman County Alabama School System and the Cleveland Public Schools.  He was a member of St. James C.P. Church and served faithfully on several auxiliaries.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Bettye Byars Scruggs of Decatur; four children, Evelyn Clay of Chattanooga, TN, Samuel E. Scruggs Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Bobby (Michelle) Scruggs of Austin, TX, Lori Scruggs of Decatur; one sister, Geraldine Billings of Knoxville, TN; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Turner of Decatur and Mattie Kenner of Hanceville;   one special friend, Robert “Bob”(Katherine) Henry of Decatur; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was loved and will be greatly missed.  A Celebration of Life and Remembrance will be 1:00 pm Saturday, May 10, 2014 at St. James Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America with Pastor Michael Jones officiating.  Inhumation will follow in Sterrs Cemetery.  The body will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Cohen, Julian Fronte Birgans, Craig Swoope, Jerry Nash, William Matthews and Andrew James Watkins.  Honorary Pallbearers will be children and grandchildren.

Public Viewing will be Thursday from 3:00pm-7:00pm and Friday from 10:00 am-7:00 pm at Reynolds Funeral Home.
