W.O. Lipscomb Jr. – Obituary

Funeral for W.O. Lipscomb Jr., 95, of Decatur will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Rudy Guess officiating and Rosleawn Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mr. Lipscomb died Friday, April 25, 2014. He was born July 23, 1918, in Limestone County to the late William Odie Lipscomb and Lelia Baugher Lipscomb. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Decatur since 1966 and a member of the Julian Harris Bible Class.

Mr. Lipscomb is a 1942 graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University), where he was a member of the ROTC. He was a life member of the Auburn Alumni Association, a Charter Life member of the Auburn Agricultural Alumni Association and a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II where he served 44 months (36 months in the Air Corps and eight months with the 37th Infantry Division (Buckeye Division). He completed two campaigns in the Philippines/Pacific Theater then Honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class. In January 1946, he went to work for the Rath Packing Co. branch in San Antonio, Texas, and spent 20 years with Rath in Texas, Iowa, Illinois and Alabama in sales and sales management. In June 1966, he joined the Decatur Packing Co. (Blue Bell) as sales manager. He semi-retired in July 1985 and continued on as credit manager two days a week until the plant closed in March 1990. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 105 for over 50 years.

Mr. Lipscomb loved people, his church and Auburn football and basketball.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Milton B. Lipscomb; his wife of 57 years, Ruth Lawler Lipscomb and his wife of 11 years, Doris Cowan Foster Lipscomb.

Survivors include his daughter, Ora Susan Lipscomb Baughn; son-in-law, Tim J. Baughn; grandson, Thomas W. Baughn; stepgrandson, Timothy Mark Baughn, all of Decatur; and stepgranddaughter, Angela Marie Underwood of Hampton, Ga.

Pallbearers will be Mike Boozer, John Coon, Jim DeAmico, Charles Elliott, Mark Heard and Bryan Henderson.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Julian Harris Bible Class.
