power workerATHENS-UPDATE:  Outage is down to 5,900 customers without power. We have crews from Decatur Utilities, Scottsboro Utilities, Tullahoma, Tenn., Benton County Electric Service in Tennessee, and Florence Utilities helping us continue to work to restore power.
The Poplar Creek Substation west of Athens at the corner of Shaw Road and U.S. 72 sustained extensive damage during yesterday’s storms. Restoration of this service area may take up to two days or longer in areas where there is more considerable damage. storm shelter
Attached is a photo of an underground storm shelter where 9 people hid during one possible tornado in Athens. A tree fell on the shelter, causing the door to burst open and rain and mud to fall in. No one was injured.
