Tommie Nell McCarthy, 79, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at her home. She was born August 15, 1934, in Mantachie. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining her church family and friends, and visiting with her grand and great grandchildren.
She and Charlie have been members of Trinity Baptist Church since 1955 where Tommie Nell served as Children’s Church Director and Benevolence Hostess Chair for many years. In her younger years, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a VBS teacher, and active member of the Ladies Volunteer Firemen Auxiliary in Fulton. She and Charlie served as PTO presidents for Fulton Grammar School and Fulton Junior High School when air conditioning was first installed in both schools.
Services will be at 1 p. m. Friday, April 18, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Dr. Don Baggett officiating. Burial will be in the Itawamba Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Charlie Scott McCarthy; three children, Terry McCarthy (Cathy) of Fulton, Sharon Daves (Steve) of Southaven, and Susan Harp (Darrell, Jr. “Buck”) of Fulton; four grandchildren, Carrie Gagne (Steven), Andrew Daves (Lauren), both of Southaven, Mary Leigh Johnson (Brad) of Georgia, and Maggie Edwards (Scott) of Smithville; nine great-grandchildren, Asher, Alex, and Arlie Gagne and Analeigh and Abbott Daves, all of Southaven; Emma Reese and Berkley Harp Edwards of Smithville; two step-grandsons, Ian and Hayden Johnson of Tupelo; and her constant companion, her dog, Mae.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Clemmie Bates Spradling, of Mantachie; three brothers, M. W. Spradling and Joe Spradling, both of Mantachie, and T. D. Spradling, of Tupelo; and her sister, Alene Foster, of Fulton.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home.
