William Austin “Billy” Strickland, 65, of Florence, Ala., passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014. Born on June 13, 1948, to Austin and Jean Strickland, Billy was a lifetime resident of Florence, Ala.

Strickland, known simply as “Billy”, was a loving person who never met a stranger. A prominent and well-loved member of the Central community in Florence, Billy made friends everywhere he went from the corner store to the Oakland Cafe. Strickland retired from Reynold’s Metals (Wise Alloys) as an electrician after 30 years, where he was known for his encouraging words and sense of humor. A consummate encourager, Billy lifted the spirits of all who knew him. He will forever be remembered as a charismatic cheerleader who always had a kind word or a funny joke. He was also a proud member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. As a lover of Jesus Christ, Billy had a clear vision of the cross. And, as a lover of music, he was an avid guitar player with a special appreciation for the blues. Billy will be missed and loved forever.

Strickland is survived by his loving parents, Austin and Jean Strickland, of Florence, Ala.; sister, Sherry Kalte; brother-in-law, Glenn Kalte, of Huntsville, Ala.; three children, Phillip Strickland, Joanna Strickland, and Josh Strickland; daughter-in-law, Julia Strickland; and six grandchildren, Morgan, Sydney, Bo, Samantha, Jack, and Gus, with another due in May.

A celebration of Billy’s life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at noon at Faith Church in Florence, Ala., with Frank Richey officiating.
