Barbara June Sloan, 84, of Florence, Ala., peacefully passed away after an extended illness on Jan. 22, 2014, at the home of her daughter, Shannon S. Halbert.
Mrs. Sloan was born in McLeansboro, Ill. on June 26, 1929. In the second grade, she met and later married Alex M. Sloan, and they were blessed with 64 wonderful years together.
Barbara was an avid gardener, a wonderful cook, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was extremely patriotic with a strong love for her country and flag. Her patriotism began at an early age due to her father, who fought in the Spanish-American War and four brothers who fought in World War I and World War II. She enjoyed reading, music, and her animals, past and present. She was a member of The First Christian Church where she became a member at the age of 12 in her hometown in Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Franklin and Cordilla Jane Munsell and 12 brothers and sisters. She was the youngest of 14 children.
She is survived by her loving, devoted husband, Alex M. Sloan; daughter, Shannon S. Halbert (the late Larry J. Halbert), Florence; son, Scott A. Sloan, Florence; grandson, Hunter W. Halbert, Houston, Texas; and sister, Delores Campbell, 87, of Mt. Vernon, Ill.
