Barbara Allen Taramangos, age 72, of Muscle Shoals, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, with her family at her side. Her family will receive friends Friday, 6-8 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. Her funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ted Vafeas and Minister Willie Mae Whitson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.
Barbara was a native of Memphis, TN. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Alabama Nursing Association and Red Hat Club. She retired as a Nurse Practioner with the Colbert County Health Department after twenty-five years of service. She was instrumental along with her daughter Gina, in the opening of Elsie’s Place Family Care Home; a specialty home for women with Dementia and Alzheimer’s, in Raleigh, NC, which is still being run by her daughter.
Her entire life was devoted to the care of others as a nurse, daughter, wife, mother, sister and aunt. She was a surrogate mother to many, biological mother to three, and grandmother to eight. She loved and served humanity and wished to be remembered in that manner.
She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-one years, George L. Taramangos of Muscle Shoals; her son, George L. Taramangos of Augusta, GA; daughters, Stephanie Rhodes and husband Don of Silverhill, AL, Gina Stavredes and husband Kevin of Raleigh, NC; brothers, Buddy McDonald and wife Shirley, Tom McDonald and wife Carol; sisters-in-law, Gaye Dixon, Elaine Carter, Sophia Zumbro, eight grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers are Dirk Dixon, George Zumbro, Trever Zumbro, Jon Zumbro, Jon Michael Zumbro, Jared Zumbro, Gray McDonald and Sam McDonald.
