James Arnold Witt, 84, a beloved father, granddaddy, brother and uncle, passed from this life on Jan. 17, 2014, at Columbia Cottage in Florence. Visitation will be Sunday from 6-9 p.m., with funeral service 2 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, of Central Heights. Joel Caudle and Chris Daniel will be officiating.
He was born to Clyde and Etta Young Witt on Feb. 21, 1929, in Lauderdale County. He was the adored big brother to 11 siblings. In 1951, he married Dorothy (Dot) Crowder and was married 54 years before her death on Aug. 10, 2005. Mr. Witt served in the Air Force for four years as an airplane mechanic. He returned home and worked as a guard at Colbert Steam Plant and was a machinist for TVA, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler. He loved Alabama football and was a member of Glendale Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Crowder Witt; parents, Mary Etta Young and Thomas Clyde Witt Sr.; grandson, Michael Shane Baskins; brother, Virgil Witt; sister, Ruth Grigsby.
He is survived by son, James Michael “Mike” Witt; daughters, Sandra Dean Baskins (Roy), Sharon Lee Burns (Melvin); brothers, T.C. Witt, Jr. and Danny Witt, of Florence; sisters, Ila Jean Wallace, of Memphis, Betty Lou Olive, Dorothy Greene, Carolyn Wallace, Mary Sharp, Francine Young, Diane Cypert, all of Florence; grandchildren, Jason Baskins (Joy), Justin and Jordan Baskins and Mandy Murner (Bryan); great-grandchildren, Willa, Mary Alice and Jay Murner, and many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Waterloo Elementary School.
The family would like to thank Columbia Cottage for their care of Mr. Witt. This was home to him and he loved everyone there and he knew you loved him.
