Nancy Elizabeth Sherrod – Obituary

Nancy Elizabeth Sherrod passed away peacefully on December 3, 2013.

Mrs. Sherrod was born Nancy Elizabeth Singletary on September 14, 1933, to Roy and Mattie Mae Singletary. She met her husband of 61 years, James I. Sherrod, while he was stationed on the Air Force base in Lake Charles, LA. Their first child, Debra, was born on the base in 1954. The family moved to Tuscumbia in 1955. Nancy and James had two more children, Scott (1956) and Barbie (1962). Mrs. Sherrod was a member of Tuscumbia Church of Christ for over 50 years. She began a kindergarten program at the Church in 1966, where she was affectionately known as, “Miss Nancy”. While at the Church she taught hundreds of children throughout the area, and continued to teach children for over 30 years.

Nancy was known for her kind heart and servant spirit. She believed that God had called and specially equipped her to teach and minister to children, and passionately made that her life’s work. Mrs. Sherrod was a wonderful mother and a loving, patient wife. She doted on her grandchildren to a fault. She was a most dignified and elegant woman that seemed to impact everyone who met her, for good.

“Miss Nancy” is survived by her husband, James; her daughters Debra James (Harry) of Sheffield and Barbie Earnest (Steve) of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and a son Scott Sherrod (Laura) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Also, grandchildren Josh James, Matt James, Abigail Earnest, Stephen Earnest, Zachary Earnest, Mattie Earnest, James Sherrod, and Hannah Sherrod. She also has three surviving brothers; Phillip Singletary (Tulsa, OK), William Singletary (Bentonville, AR) and James Singletary (St. Petersburg, FL).

She was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Gail LaFargue and brother, Roy Homer (Bubba) Singletary, Jr.

Services will be held Saturday, December 7, at Tuscumbia Church of Christ. Visitation will be from l-3pm; Funeral Service at 3pm.; Burial following at Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Bobby Denton, Doug Walker, Ricky Willingham, and the 5 grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers include Sue and Tommy Warhurst, Lisabeth and Ralph Foster, Dr. Jerry Williams, Nick Wright, Jerry VanDerhoef, James Hanna, and John Cahoon.

Memorial donations may be made to Mars Hill Bible School Kindergarten; 698 Cox Creek Parkway, Florence, AL, 35630.

The family expresses special thanks to the staff of the Cottage of the Shoals for their wonderful care.
