MUSCLE SHOALS– Breast cancer is a touchy subject among women. Statistics tell us that one in eight will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives. From diagnosis closing the loopto treatment, it can be a long and difficult battle.

Unfortunately, just five percent of the women who fight breast cancer take the final step in closing the loop on the disease by having breast reconstruction surgery. Raising awareness about that is the focus of the inaugural Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, or BRA Day, event in Alabama.

Dr. Russell Jennings, a board certified plastic surgeon with Shoals Plastic Surgery on the Shoals Hospital campus, will

lead a panel discussion on breast reconstruction awareness on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Shoals Chamber of Commerce in Florence. Joining him on the panel will be two breast reconstruction surgery patients, Cheri Miles and Tasha Clanton; as well as two general surgeons, Dr. Bob Bailey and Dr. Wes Desselle.

“It’s important for women to have this kind of forum to hear from patients as well as physicians,” Jennings said. “Breast reconstruction surgery really does help women regain that sense of self that might have been compromised during the treatment phase of breast cancer.”

bra dayBRA Day is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness, and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. It occurs annually in October and is a collaborative effort between the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Plastic Surgery Foundation, plastic surgeons, breast centers, nurse navigators, corporate sponsors, and breast cancer support groups.

Shoals Plastic Surgery, Shoals Hospital, and ECM Hospital are proud to be the first in Alabama to sponsor a BRA Day event.
