Lola Bess Kramer Northington – Obituary

Lola Bess Kramer Northington, 96, of Huntsville passed away Saturday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace D. Kramer, and Daisy DeShurley Kramer; her husband of 63 years Colonel Hartsell H. Northington, her brother, Frederick J. Kramer, and her beloved pet of 55 years Rocket the red-eared slider turtle.
Survivors include her son, Mark Wallace Northington of Mobile; nephew, Fredrick Jordan Kramer and wife, Elaine, of Edmond, Oklahoma; nieces, Debbie Kramer of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Beth Peacock and husband, Mark, of Georgetown, Texas; sister-in-law, Patricia Kramer of Ardmore, Oklahoma; numerous cousins and a host of friends.
Lola was born in Tuttle, Oklahoma and graduated with honors from Tuttle High School where she lettered five years in basketball for the Tuttle Tigers. She attended Oklahoma College for Women, and then graduated from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She taught in Ramond, Marshall, Oilton Oklahoma, Fairfax, Virginia Karachi Pakistan and retired in 1980 after twelve years in the Home Economies Dept. at Whitesburg Middle School in Huntsville, Alabama.
Mrs. Northington was a member of First United Methodist Church where she served on the Advisory Board and the Congregational Care Committee. She was a member of the Ruth Circle.
Lola spent years of active service with United Methodist Women, Alpha Delta Kappa Fedibs Alpha Teachers Honorary Sorority; Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, Junior Welfare League, Huntsville Botanical Garden Guild, Huntsville Museum of Art, duMidi Women’s Club, African Violet Society, American Red Cross Gray Lady Volunteers and a longtime board member of the International Services Council.
Lola loved animals, flowers and birds. She was a loyal suporter of the Greater Huntsville Humane Society and a 1983 graduate of the Master Gardeners of Madison County Alabama.
She was a resident of Brookdale Place Retirement Community.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Laughlin Service Chapel with Dr. Glenn Conner officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or Humane Society.
