Al state trooperMONTGOMERY – During the four-day Fourth of July holiday travel period, Alabama State Troopers
investigated 434 traffic crashes, resulting in 154 injuries and four deaths.
The fatal crashes occurred in Randolph, Lee, Chilton and Montgomery counties during the
holiday travel period, which was from 12:01 a.m. Thursday, July 4, to midnight Sunday, July 7. It
is unknown at this time whether alcohol was a factor in any of the crashes. Seat belts were
available in all four of the vehicles involved in the deadly crashes, but only one of the individuals
killed was using a seat belt.
During this year’s Fourth of July safety period, troopers issued 2,126 citations for speeding and
607 citations for seat belt/child restraint violations, made 59 DUI arrests and assisted 299
motorists.
At this time, statistics on fatal crashes from other law enforcement agencies across the state are
not available. Those numbers will be available once all activity has been reported.
