Tyler Joseph Smith, 30, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Born in Plano, Texas, Tyler was raised in Huntsville and is survived by his parents, Mike and Kim Smith; his siblings, Liz, James, and Jessie Smith; and his grandmother, Merle Newcomb.

He was a talented trombone player in the marching bands at Grissom High School and then The University of Alabama. Beyond music, Tyler was passionate about meteorology, being outdoors, and running. He enjoyed chasing storms and finding new niches to research voraciously. He was a devoted brother and son.

Tyler was one of a kind. He had a genial and caring soul, keen wit, and the ability to see the world on his own terms. He was intentional, intellectually curious, and carried things with the weight they deserved. He brought grace and gentleness everywhere he went, wanting earnestly for the world to be a better and kinder place. Prioritizing the needs of his loved ones above his own was simply second nature. He was sensitive and compassionate, perceptive of the needs of others, and offered the sweetest words of encouragement. Mere moments in his presence made apparent the depth of compassion he had for people, animals, and nature. We will try to continue his legacy of observing the world without judging, and of noticing the minutia and greeting it with open hearts and minds. You can find Tyler in a quick joke, whispered behind a smirk, timed perfectly, and capable of breaking any awkward silence.

For several years, Tyler faced mental illness with bravery, resilience, and persistence. We find comfort in the peace we are sure he has found. If you would like to honor him, find a quiet moment by a lake, watch a storm come in, or walk down a new path. Honor him by honoring the world he loved.

The family would ask that in lieu of flowers you consider a donation in Tyler’s memory to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or the Land Trust of North Alabama.
