Mr. Joe Mack Hampton Joe Mack Hampton, age 80, passed away on October 21, 2026. Born on July 27, 1946, in Fayetteville, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Martin Wade Hampton, Jr., and Wilma Lee Tillman Hampton. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, artist, and man of faith, Joe leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and craftsmanship that will be cherished for generations.
Known to his family as “Papa,” Joe had a special gift for making everyone feel important and loved. He was a devoted family man who treasured time spent with those closest to him. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play basketball, proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and his steady presence, generous heart, and loving spirit will be deeply missed.
Joe was blessed with gifted hands and a remarkable talent for building and creating. He built every structure on his property, including the family home, leaving behind a lasting testament to his skill, hard work, and dedication. He was also a talented artist whose creativity reflected his unique ability to see beauty and possibility in the world around him.
For 40 years, Joe faithfully served the students and community of Scotts Hill High School as a coach, educator and administrator. Throughout his career, he taught art, worked in the library, taught history, and served as assistant principal. He also briefly coached football, but his biggest impact came as a basketball coach, impacting the lives of so many sharing his knowledge, discipline, and love of the game with generations of young people. His presence in the school and community extended far beyond the classroom. In recognition of his lasting contributions, the gymnasium at Scotts Hill Elementary School bears his name, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated so much of his life to education, mentorship, and young people.
Joe’s faith was an important part of his life. He faithfully served as a deacon at Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where he demonstrated his commitment to his church family and his Lord through years of service.
Perhaps one of Joe’s most treasured accomplishments was sharing 60 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Cathie Hampton. Their lifelong love and devotion stood as a beautiful example of commitment, partnership, and enduring affection.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cathie Hampton; his son, Eric Hampton (Rachel); and his two daughters, Christie Wilkins (Ray) and Tara Morris (Kip). He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren: Brett Wilkins; Carrie Donovan (Bryce); Jonathan Wilkins (Katie); Jenna Nielsen (Michael); Cain Tubbs; Katie Hehe (Payton); Wade Tubbs (Alyssa); Corey Morris; Dylan Morris; Jordan Lewis (Patrick); Julie Hampton; Josie Hampton; Jacob Hampton; and John Henry Hampton. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy and pride.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his infant brother, Jimmie Hampton; his sister, Joan Presley; and his infant grandson, Isaiah Hampton.
Joe’s life was defined not only by what he built with his hands, but also by what he built in the hearts of those who knew him. Through his years of teaching, his service to his church, his artistic talents, and, above all, his unwavering love for his family, he made a difference that will endure. Though his family will miss his presence, his lessons, laughter, and craftsmanship, the love of Papa will remain with them always.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Union Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Pafford Funeral Home in Scotts Hill.
Joe Mack Hampton will be remembered with love, honored for a life well lived, and forever cherished by the many lives he touched.
