Bill Hughes Profile Photo  Bill Hughes, 80, of Oakland, passed away Sat., October 3, 2026, at his home.

He was born Tuesday, February 12, 1946, in Memphis, son of the late Robert and Freddie Mae Donaldson Hughes and retired in 2004 from the Memphis Fire Department after a 34 year career.

He was a Christian and dedicated fire fighter and enjoyed walking, dancing and was known to be an exellent handyman. He loved farming and traveling. He served 2 years in the US Army and lived most of his life in Shelby County, with the last 20 years in McNairy and Fayette Counties. He loved watching college football with any SEC team but especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, camping with them

Memorial services are 3 pm Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Shackelford Funeral Directors chapel in Bolivar. Visitation will be Thurs., October 8 from 1-3 pm at Shackelford’s in Bolivar.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Hughes of Oakland; his sons, Chris Hughes (Christy) of Collierville, Tim Hughes (Wendy) of Somerville and Robert Hughes (Lisa) of Memphis; a brother, Donnie Hughes (Nancy) of Somerville; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Polly Jordan and Frances Greiner. Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
