Janice Evelyn Alters, age 88, of Alabama, passed away on September 23, 2026.
Jan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonard Alters; her daughter, Sandra Jo; and seven brothers: Michael, Del, Roy Thomas, Bob, Richard, Jack, and Charles. She is survived by four sisters: Ruth, Estelle, Linda, and Gloria.
She was the mother of three children: her oldest son, Bill (Jackie); daughter, Sandra Jo; and her youngest daughter, Debi. She was also a grandmother to three grandsons, Anthony (Nicole), Connor (Ryleigh), and Jacob (Katie), and a great-grandmother to one great-grandson, Beckham.
Jan was an Alabama girl from the very beginning. As a little girl, her grandmother affectionately nicknamed her “Jenny-Wit,” a name that became part of the story of a life spanning more than eight decades.
In her younger years, Jan loved spending time outdoors, tending to her yard and garden. She took great pleasure in caring for the things she planted and watching them grow. And anyone who knew her well might remember another favorite: when Waylon Jennings’ Rainy Day Woman came on the radio, you couldn’t keep Jan away from the volume knob. “Look out ears, here it comes!”
Throughout her life, Jan faced her share of obstacles, but she met them with a strong will and remarkable resilience. Whatever life placed in her path, she had a way of finding the strength to carry on.
Jan lived a long life that touched generations of her family. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a sister, and once upon a time, a little Alabama girl called “Jenny-Wit.” Her life will continue through the memories, stories, and love shared by the family she leaves behind. Those who knew Jan will remember her in their own special way, and those memories will remain an enduring part of her legacy.
A graveside service for Jan will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Duncan Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 3935 Duncan Creek Road, Russellville, Alabama 35653.
