ATHENS – On Friday, September 11, TVA’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Unit 1 was safely taken offline for its scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. This planned work reinforces TVA’s commitment to deliver low‑cost, reliable American energy that powers the region’s future and supports growing industries.
More than 800 contractors and shared resource employees will support Browns Ferry employees in completing thousands of work activities during this outage that includes numerous inspections, tests, maintenance work and replacements to further strengthen the reliability of our equipment.
“The work being performed during this outage is designed to maintain Unit 1’s performance following breaker close,” said Site Vice President Daniel Komm. “The team prepared well in advance for this maintenance window and will complete these activities with safety as our first priority.”
TVA’s investment in improvements at all three nuclear power stations helps to ensure the energy needs of the Tennessee Valley are met for decades to come. Supporting this effort is the approval of Browns Ferry’s subsequent license renewal last year which allows continued operation until 2053 for Unit 1, 2054 for Unit 2, and 2056 for Unit 3.
Browns Ferry Unit 1 is one of seven TVA nuclear reactors generating low-cost and reliable energy across the Valley. The TVA nuclear fleet is the third largest in the nation, safely and reliably providing about 40 percent of all electricity used by nearly 10 million people in the Tennessee Valley.
Nuclear energy is critical to our nation’s energy security. Moving forward, TVA is implementing a Nuclear Life Extension plan, with more than 400 projects in progress, that will add up to 244 MW of additional generation over the next 10–15 years to help ensure our region’s energy security.
