Photo of John Larry WestJohn Larry West, age 85, of Double Springs passed away Wednesday September 16, 2026, at Hendrix Health and Rehab. He was born January 30, 1941 to John and Laura West. He was a devoted member of the Double Springs Church of Christ, where he faithfully served as an elder and teacher. He also served faithfully as a minister at Lynn Church of Christ, Oak Grove, and Brock Church of Christ. A 1959 graduate of Winston County High School, he continued his education at the University of Alabama, earning a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and later a master’s degree in Secondary Education, along with an Administrative Certificate. John dedicated much of his life to education, teaching math and later serving in administrative roles within Winston County Board of Education. Outside of his career and church service, he was an avid supporter of Alabama football and Winston County football and especially enjoyed golf with his friends. Above all, his greatest joy was his family. He was always there to support his children and grandchildren in whatever they were doing, and he treasured his time he spent playing with his grandchildren. His devotion to his faith, family, students, and community leaves behind a loving legacy that will be remembered by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia West; daughter, Dianna (Jeff) Cole; son, Patrick (Rhonda) West; granddaughters, Candace (John) Young, and Anna Kate (Jordan) Campbell, and Abby (Hunter) Collier; and great grandchildren, Nathan Young, Matthew Young, and Lou Campbell. John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Laura West; and brother, Bob West. Visitation will be Sunday September 20 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Double Springs Church of Christ where the service will be held the following day on Monday September 21 at 11:00 a.m. Vance Hutton, Justin Guin, and John Thomaston will officiate. Burial will be at Double Springs Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to the West Fund at Double Springs Church of Christ or Double Springs Memorial (Cockrell West) Cemetery fund.
