Carmen Fay Key, age 65, of Piedmont, AL, peacefully passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Gadsden Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends.
Carmen had never been an organ donor until this past year, when she made the decision to become one. Through her selfless decision, she was able to save three lives and counting. If you knew Carmen, you knew how much she loved helping others. She would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need. In honor of her gift of life, Gadsden Regional Medical Center also held an honor walk for her.
Carmen was born January 21, 1961 in Columbus, GA, at Fort Benning. She graduated from White Plains High School in 1979. She worked as a seamstress at CVG for the past five years, as well as at Bostrom & Springs before that.
Carmen had a love for drawing, crocheting, sewing, magnet fishing, metal detecting, and playing with her grandchildren. She loved all children and never hesitated to show them kindness and love.
Carmen is survived by her sister, Tootsie Tierce (Bill); brother, Ralph Key (Jim); daughter and son-in-law, Kayla and Michael Shell; grandchildren, Bentley and Korbin Shell; nephew, Andrew Tierce; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Cecil Key and Maria (Eberling) Key, and her lifelong companion, Carlton Pody.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the MICU at Gadsden Regional Medical Center who cared for Carmen during her final days with us. Your compassion, kindness, and care will never be forgotten.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
