TUSCUMBIA-“Oka Kapassa” is a Muscogee (Muskogean) phrase spoken by the Chickasaw that translates literally to “Cold Water.” Historically, this name referred to the large, cold-flowing big spring around which the original settlement of Tuscumbia, Alabama was built.
Now in Tuscumbia Oka Kapassa brings to mind a very special Native American gathering held annually the 2nd full weekend of September in Spring Park, Tuscumbia, Alabama to celebrate the culture and traditions of Native Americans who once thrived in North Alabama.
This year was no exception….come rain or shine the celebration went on. With crafts, dancing, native food, fun activities for everyone, demonstrations and music. The Quad Cities Daily was on hand to capture this special event in photos. Enjoy!
