James Edward Gholston passed away peacefully at his home in Russellville, Alabama on August 1, 2026, at the age of 89.
James was born on December 10, 1936, to Annie Rebus Phillips Graham and Andrew Gholston. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Antioch Church in Tharptown, Alabama. He later joined First Baptist Church of Russellville in August of 1975.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Della Ann Gholston; his mother Annie Rebus Graham, father Andrew Gholston and Gilmore Graham.
James was a kindhearted man with a gift for storytelling. He loved sharing memories of his childhood and the many experiences that shaped his life. His first job at Hayes Oldsmobile sparked a lifelong passion for automobiles and car dealerships. He later worked for First National Bank of Russellville as a janitor and bank courier for many years before joining Franklin Electric, where he faithfully worked until his retirement in 2011.
James leaves behind many who will forever treasure his memory. He is survived by his son Ronnie Gholston, daughter Glenda (husband Roger) McGuire of New Market, Alabama, son Darryl Keith (wife Janie May) Gholston of Russellville Alabama, son Charlston (wife Shea) Gholston of Russellville, Alabama and honorary daughter Cynthia Gholston.
James is survived by brothers James Gilmore (Juanita) Graham, Robert Graham and sister Ida Willingham.
James is also survived by his eight grandchildren; Clarissa (Elliott) Thompson, Darryl McGuire, Jamario Gholston, Eric L McGuire, Jordan Michael (Tamala) Gholston, Arial Gholston (Carvel), Jasmine (Christian) Fanjoy, Danielle (Andre) Goliday.
James was especially proud of his twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly called him “Paw Paw”: Kaylen Rushing, Ellis Thompson, Aubrey McGuire, Jayce Fanjoy, Darrian Jolly, Austin McGuire, Amariah Loyd, Kyla Gholston, Autumn McGuire, Aubree Gholston, Kinsley Gholston, and Jayden Gholston.
James will be remembered for his gentle spirit, warm smile, and the deep love he had for his family. He found joy in sharing stories, working hard, and spending time with those he loved. His legacy of kindness, humility, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
