Celebrating the Life and Legacy of William “Bill” A. Zarr
Huntsville, AL- William “Bill” A. Zarr, a titan of the defense industry and loved by his family and friends, passed away peacefully at home on July 15, 2026 at the age of 87.
Born on January 26th 1939 in Worcester, MA. Bill dedicated his life to a mission greater than himself: His start was the love of science that developed into the safety and security of the nation. His extraordinary career in the defense industry spanned over 60 years, characterized by unwavering integrity, visionary leadership, and an unparalleled work ethic.
He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts, A premier STEM-focused university and the global leader in project-based learning and use-inspired research and received his Master of Science from Northeastern University Graduate School of Engineering.
The crown jewel of Bill’s professional journey was an incredible 50-year tenure at Raytheon. Joining the company during a pivotal era in aerospace and technology, Bill became an institutional cornerstone. Over five decades, he witnessed and shaped the evolution of modern defense systems, mentoring generations of engineers, scientists, and professionals along the way. Known for a brilliant mind and a collaborative spirit, Bill was widely respected as both a brilliant strategist and a trusted teammate.
Among many other projects, Bill was the conceptual force behind the design of the AMRAAM warhead and the Patriot PAC 2 warhead. Both AMRAAM and Patriot warheads are still in service today and due to their effectiveness have protected and defended, and still are protecting and defending not only United States military and civilian personnel, but also the military and civilian populace of many of our allies currently.
Beyond monumental professional achievements, he was defined by devotion to family and community. He brought the same loyalty and dedication championed at work into the roles of husband, parent, grandparent, and friend.
His devotion to community included dedicating significant time, energy and effort to advancing and improving the care of people with mental health issues and developmental disabilities. This included being instrumental in opening one of the first community residences in Massachusetts and the country as a whole, which have since by and large come to replace large institutional facilities. In recognition of his work, accomplishments and integrity, Governor Michael Dukakis appointed him to the Massachusetts State Advisory Council On Mental Health and Mental Retardation in 1978.
William “Bill” A. Zarr is survived by his daughters Ramey and Lori (Sean) and granddaughter Lily, and a legacy of innovation that will protect generations to come. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Sims Zarr.
A visitation will be held on August 8, 2026 at 12:00 noon with service at 1:00 pm at New Hope Funeral Home and graveside at Kennamer Cemetery.
